Moderation, Spam and Spamers

Liberator:

You can delete spamers posts but you can't delete spamers. The only way to delete spamers is to become an Admin. I cannot give you "only power to delete/ban spamers/members", but I have to give you "complete Admin powers". Complete Admin powers comes with "Complete Admin Duties". Admin duties are more complex than banning members. Admin must be able to technically operate this club. It involves an "IPC Admin Manual" much more complex than "IPC Moderator Manual". It involves high level of technical knowledge and it involves time and effort. Admin does updates, programming, net security, codes/passwords, encryptions and general technical operation of the club.

Average person sees this club is open for business but they are not aware of how much work it takes to operate it and protect it. Future IPC Web Site is the same way but more complex than this club. It will take good chunk of time, devotion and knowledge to operate it. That is why it is taking so long to put it up for grand opening. Let me define it in this way: Moderator operates the "surface" of the club as a police. Moderation requires basic technical knowledge. Admin operates the "foundation" of the club as an engineer. Administration requires advanced technical knowledge.

Admin's duties are much more complex than moderators. If admin doesn't know what he/she doing, his/her account can be hacked. If Hizbollah hacks Admin's account, then Hizbollah can delete this whole club from face of the Internet.

Now, tell me if you have the time, the will, the technical knowledge and readiness to take on Admin Responsibilities?

If, presently, you don't have the time or you don't want the responsibility or you aren't ready to be trained to take on the Admin's job, then the sensible thing for you is to delete spam posts and post the names of the spamers on a new List of Spamers Death Row (separate post), so the Admin can execute them, and add them to the list of "Dead Spamers" (separate post). Then the Admin can delete their name from "Spamers Death Row" list and add them to "Dead Spamers" list.

I am adding two posts:

Dead Spamers List
Spamers on Death Row List

You and IPC Office can edit these lists and switch spamers from one to another. It's like a prison death row cells and gas chamber room!

We can conduct our discussions on spam and spamers under this thread.

The latest spamer tactic is to post supposedly valid reply posts to different valid threads and make a silly sentence like:

I disagree
I read it but I don't get it
I can't do it, I don't have the power to do it.
How do you see it?

or other nonsense sentences.

The trick is that they post links to some commercial sites (software, online games, company, etc) in their signatures.

How can you tell the difference in linked signatures?
Valid members' linked signatures are relevant to the contents of this club and their posts are also relevant to the contents of this club and their posts are more than a short reply fragment, sentence or paragraph which doesn't make sense or match the topic of the threads.

Spam posts and their owners' linked signatures have nothing to do with contents of this club.

Spamers think they are smart. they used to post spam posts (advertisement) in reply to valid posts of valid members. Now, they are posting supposedly relevant replies to valid threads! They think they can hide their advertisements in between the threads' posts, so the readers will view them!

The only place for valid advertisement in this club, is the "Free Advertisement" Hall => "Promote your web site and links" Room. Anywhere else, it considers spam.

For example,
Ali Mostoufi has linked signature. But Ali Mostoufi's links are to his Iranian News Site and to Iranian Astrology Site. Also, Ali Mostoufi's posts are relevant to contents of this club, so Ali Moustofi's posts are not spam.

But posts of the Dead Spamer's named in this thread had linked signatures to certain irrelevant sites (online gaming, commercial, software, hosting, etc.) and their posts are an amateur effort to pretend they are reply posting in relevance to the topic of the thread.

Today, the spam problem is relatively small but when the new web site comes out and traffic expands, the spam will be a large problem. Maybe then, we draft another moderator to help you or maybe then you can take on the responsibility of becoming an Admin.

I think you have been around and you know how to execute law and order in this club and you know what's spam and whats not.

Regards,
CR

Dear CR,

Due to other obligations I don't think an Admin role would be suitable to me, if I had the time I wouldn't have hesitated but at the present moment it doesn't suite me.

I'll keep an eye on spammers.

Dear Moderators + Webmistress:

We have deleted and banned 3 members:

DeD2814
line633
DeD37520

The reason:

In the past, the spamers used to post spam and advertisement, and we stopped that. Then they came up with the idea to post their links in their signature and post supposedly normal posts in the club, and we stopped that. Now their latest method is to post their links in their profiles so they could advertise this way, and we stopped that.

3 IDs above, one had a porno site, one had a online gaming site and the other had a Jean sales site. All of them having no other choice to advertise, they linked their sites to promote them in their profiles.

Some may think we are taking extreme measures, but we believe the cockroaches must be exterminated before we will have an infestation problem on our hands. In 2 days, 3 spamers joined the club to advertise for their business. We are sure, you have noticed.

We are determined to make IPC, spam free. Spam problem is small now, but when the new web site starts its operation, then it will be a large problem. We encourage moderators to delete all spam posts and add by edit in, the spamers names in the:

Spamers On Death Row List
http://www.iranpoliticsclub.net/club/vi ... .php?t=645

Once you add a spamer to the "Spamers On Death Row List", then later on, we delete/ban them and we remove them from that list and add them to:

Dead Spamers List
http://www.iranpoliticsclub.net/club/vi ... .php?t=644

We believe we have to take extreme measures to stop the spam in IPC. If we don't do this, then, the same as old IPC Club in yahoo, the club will be loaded with spam posts and spamers.

We welcome moderators and members to post their advise and opinion under this thread.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Regards,
IPC Office

Lib, Camran, admins & moderators:

You must edit the:

Spamers On Death Row List
http://www.iranpoliticsclub.net/club/vi ... .php?t=645

and add spamer's ID to the pre-made numbers on the list. Then we check them, ban them, delete them from "Spamers On Death Row List" and add them to "Dead Spamers List". You have the power to edit "Spamers On Death Row List" post.

Take a look:

Dead Spamers List
http://www.iranpoliticsclub.net/club/vi ... .php?t=644

This is becoming rediculous. we have banned 7 spamers in one week. We have been hit with spamers. If we already have such a large problem, then what will happen when the web site comes out?

If the problem continues we may have to not allow the members to be able to join by themselves. We can select the members by approval. But then again, they (spamers) can always disguise themselves as normal members.

We are open to suggestions. Please think & suggest, what we can do about spamers problem.

Moderators:

Delete spam posts right away without thinking twice. Then add spamer's ID to the "Spamers on Death Row List".

Admins: Ban spamer on "Spamers on Death Row List" and move their ID to "Dead Spamers List", without thinking twice.

Delete all spam posts and ban all spamers. We must come up with a permanent solution to the spam problem, maybe "The Final Solution" and kill 6 million of them! How about a software for Spamers Genocide? Gas Chambers or Ovens, take your pick?

task task :)

Thanks for your hard work.

Anti-Spam Manual

Moderators

1. If you notice an spam post, then delete it and add the spamer's ID to the "Spamers on death row list".

2. If you notice a post with a commercial linked signature, irrelevant to contents of this club (pornography, online gambling, merchandise sales, etc.), then delete the post and add the spamer's ID to the "Spamers on death row list".

3. If you notice a member's profile with a commercial linked homepage, irrelevant to contents of this club (pornography, online gambling, merchandise sales, etc.), then add the spamer's ID to the "Spamers on death row list".

Admins

1.
Routinely check the "Spamers on death row list". Move the spamers' IDs (added by the moderators to this list), from this list to "Dead spamers list" and ban them from IPC.

This is a good plan for now. If you work together as a "Task Force", we should win the war on spam. We can stick with this plan for now. In a meanwhile, we can search for other options to facilitate our war against spam.

Best Regards,

CR

Master Camran Khan:

Dear Lord Cam, The IPC Theoretician, political consultant and trouble shooter, explain more.

Will you elaborate? Should they only send an request email to join? Or should they write an essay? What should they include in this email? A spamer can also apply to join, he can write an email too!

We have the option not to allow people to join by themselves. We can draft members only by approval. We can also make it harder & make them to write emails.

We did not do all that. We made it easy for people to join for their convenience. Also, many people are not hi-tech, they have problems joining a simple membership, now how can they join if we make it much more complicated?

We can do anything we want. Our concern was to make it easy for people, but now, we have a large spam problem which will only get larger by time. Advise us, come up with ideas and elaborate on your suggestion.

We are open to suggestions and we will study all of your suggestions.

IPC Security Plan

Postby IPC » Wed Nov 23, 2005 1:09 pm

Lord Cam:

"Dear IPC Goddess"

CR did not make the post. The post was made by office.

"Inviting them individually by automated emails which will be problem free because we know they are genuine"

On year 2000, when Ahreeman started IPC, he used to do that. Invitation only and searching for qualified selected emails, can be very time consuming.

"We have to join other clubs finding active member."

We used to do it in Yahoo. But now, it is time consuming and we have no manpower.

"Allowing people to view but joining under certain conditions."

Makes sense. In the future, maybe we move to this security level.

"Do we have resource to join other clubs? 2. Can we make an automated emailing service after approving a person in other clubs and who could be able to send the emails?"

We have members who are also members in other exiled forums (ex: Liberator) and members who are also members in inside Iran forums (Operation members). Making email lists of active members of other forums is easy and sending emails is also easy. But isn't it better and more practical to once a while, post an informative article in other selected forums for public viewing, so anyone interested, can come here and join? Please notice that lots of people don't like to receive invitation emails because they consider them as spam!

From time to time, we post informative articles around selected Iranian forums inside and outside Iran. We get better results by doing this, rather than collecting email lists and sending invitations, which is also time consuming.

Our Private List

But we actively collect email lists of all relevant Iranian:

Political parties
Political organizations
Political personalities
Cultural Organizations
Selected Media
Interesting Persons of Intellect

And we save this list for future mailing of special announcements. This is the only list, worth collecting. This special list is collected and updated by Ahreeman and Catayoun only.

Thanks for your deep thoughts. Inform us with more thoughts. Your thoughts are very useful.

Our Concerns, Our Dilemma

We can enforce the highest level of security to protect IPC from spamers, but this can also hurt us, because most of our members are inside Iran. We are the only Iranian exile based Forum which majority of its members are inside Iran. Iranian forums/organizations in exile have no members inside Iran, and that is why they are of no relevance or importance inside Iran. Inside Iran members are most important to us. Many of these readers/members are not fluent with English Language and Technical Procedures. This unfamiliarity can avoid them from joining. So this can cost us members inside Iran. These are the members, which we desperately seek and need their connections inside Iranian Universities and private sector. These are student members in universities of Iran. The reason IPC is relevant, is because majority of our members are inside Iran, morely we are the only Iranian exile based forum with readers/members inside Iran.

The Plan

For now, this is the plan,

Why don't we follow CR's Anti-Spam Manual.

Anti-Spam Manual
http://www.iranpoliticsclub.net/club/vi ... =2859#2859

And follow this protocol:

Update

IPC Security Plan

Level 1 Security: By this date, anyone could register in the club.
Level 2 Security: As of now, we register members, by email validation only.
Level 3 Security: If doesn't work, in future we register members, by approval only.
Level 4 Security: If doesn't work, in future we register members, by required information only.
Level 5 Security: If doesn't work, in future we switch the club for registered members' viewing only.
Level 6 Security: If doesn't work, in future we accept invited registered members only.

Isn't the material posted on the IPC Forum (90+%) in english?

Please cut in and give suggestions and opinion.

"Isn't the material posted on the IPC Forum (90+%) in English?"

That is true, but have in mind that even if everyone in Iran speaks English, yet only a small number are fluent in English. If we make the registration complicated, people will get lost. Language difficulties on technical jargons make them confused on how to join. But if registration is simple, then everyone who doesn't speak 20 words of English, can join. If your question is in regards to why would a non English speaker join an English forum, then the answer is that Iranians love politics, cannot stand IRI and they love practicing their English in an Iranian, English speaking environment by reading English. A lot of Iranians understand English but are not good with writing and speaking the language. We have Iranian readers or members who have been with us for years but they never post. We have operation members who never post or not even registered. We had readers and members who joined us or have been reading the site since 5 years ago. At first, not able to speak a sentence in English but today they speak fine English, because 5 years ago they have decided to read IPC instead of Quran!
