1. In Anticipation of a Specific Protest Date:  Â
A few years ago, in anticipation of Tir 18th, protests erupted in Tehran and other major Iranian cities. In the days prior to Tir 18, the protests were larger than the original Tir 18 street protests. When these un-scheduled protests erupted, they were immediately (within 1-2 hours) were picked up by Los Angeles satellite TV stations. That year, on Tir 18th, nothing really happened.

The opposition should be ready to fully utilize the potential of protests, that may erupt on any day.   Â

A specific date may be chosen by the opposition, however, the actual Protest Combustion Day is likely to occur sooner in anticipation of the chosen date.
        Â

Everyone will know that on a specific previously chosen date by the opposition, martial law will be in effect and the situation may be controlled by the authorities.  Prior to the chosen day, however, the authorities cannot continuously enforce martial law. The increased anticipation before martial law is officially enforced, as previous times, is likely to result in a spontaneous street protests. Martial law cannot be enforced during an entire summer season. Security forces in Iran know and have acknowledged this fact. Â

The anticipation to the climax (foreplay to the regime's end), may turn out to be more effective than picking the specific date.  It does make sense to pick a protest day, however, any protests and sparks should be fully supported, which may occur at any time. When the wheels are set into motion, given the adequate climate, things will hopefully happen and opposition groups should not get too picky about an exact dates.

2. Empowerment By Simple Tactics:Â
By using simple tactics, segments of the population in Iran will feel more energized during upcoming protests. Cultivating simple ideas, before any protests, can help to create an atmosphere of empowerment within segments of the Iranian population.Â
             Â
Simple ideas such as creating city-wide road blocks can be cultivated by repetition, so that when spontaneous protests occur, they will be widely used. Telling the population via satellite TV, on the protest day, to start using road-blocks will be relatively ineffective. Repeatedly informing the viewers, months/weeks in advance, about the practicality and potential of city-wide road-blocks during protests will produce results. Â

When city-wide road-blocks are in place in Iranian cities when street protests are taking place, the populace will think that the mullahs have lost control of the protests and the city. People will think that the will of the people has over-come the abilities of the authorities.
                      Â
Many should be automatically associate street protests with setting up quick road-blocks.
      Â
This learned association, will only happen by repeatedly publicizing the effectiveness and practicality of setting up road-blocks.
   Â
Learned-helplessness in psychology is another way of describing depression: when one feels options are limited and the resulting in-action does not change the status quo. Â

Publicizing road closures during upcoming Tehran protests.

Tehran Traffic Paralysis:Â
      Â
1. PREPARATION: Exile media would encourage residents of Tehran (and other cities) to have some materials ready (in their trunks) for making a quick piles in the middle of roads, in the event of upcoming street protests, on short notice. This idea needs to be publicized BEFORE the out-break of protests (among all opposition media outlets) so that small teams (3-4 close friends or lone individuals) can quickly spring into action to safely close roads.    Â

2. TRIGGER: Within an hour of any street protests in Tehran (and other cities), LA-based satellite TV stations usually broadcast the breaking news to Iran, like previous times. In the event of upcoming street protests, encouraging the closure of roads (with adequate preparation) will trigger many, who have thought about and prepared for road-blocks, to quickly download piles of materials and block major traffic lanes.    Â

Road closures will bring the (otherwise ordinary) student protests to a new level.    Â
      Â
Given the current hot Tehran climate and the upcoming "election,"
street protests are guaranteed to take place within the next few months. Â
Imagine Tir 18th protests with city-wide road closures affecting large areas of the city.  Â
       Â

The above steps:  (1)Preparation + (2)Trigger = will cause = Tehran Traffic Paralysis, within a few hoursÂ

Tehran Traffic Paralysis = Creation of the intended psychological effect for city residents: The mullahs have lost control of the protests and the city! = Impression: Full scale uprising is taking place cannot be put-down by the authorities...
       Â
The traffic paralysis will give the impression of a planned synchronized uprising.
Exile media have been effective in spreading breaking news. Â

Keep in mind that cars are currently at a near stand-still in today's Tehran traffic, even on Thursday nights. When the cars slowly stop and the occupants simply leave the vehicles, no one will get hurt. The effect of road closures will be felt by all.  Â

Effective street piles can be set-up in less than a minute: Â Â Â
         Â

Almost any thing can be used to create effective piles in the middle of streets:
 old tires
 bricks
 concrete blocks
 furniture.... Â
Enough material can be carried with 1 Peykan to block 3 lanes of traffic.Â
     Â
Those who set up the piles, would have left the road-block site within half a minute, after starting their task. The average hot-blooded 19 year old can run over 200 meters in 30 seconds...

Abandoned cars can also be left in middle of roads. Simply slowing down and leaving 3 cars parked next to each other, in middle of a road, will be effective. A driver, on foot, would be 300 meters from the abandoned cars within 50 seconds.

 Tehran's population density is high, but the city area is not that large.Â
After all, how many miles is it from the train station (in southern Tehran) to Meydooneh Tajreesh (in north of the city): about 10 miles  Â
Most of Tehran's population lives within 5-6 miles of the center.Â
Please take a few moments to view the map of Tehran on the internet (internet search of Tehran Map).
   During this trip it occurred to me that Toronto has only a fraction of Tehran's population, however, Toronto has a wider area.    Â

The road-block idea needs to be well publicized before the out-break of protests (among all opposition groups and media outlets) so that groups of 3-4 people (groups of close friends) start collecting materials, as mentioned above.  Â

Things will spring into action (if previously well publicized), when events will eventually happen.
   Â
By using the mass-communication capabilities of exile media,
within 4 hours ( or even less ),  Tehran's traffic would be paralyzed

Given:
Tehran's population density,
the relative ease of starting road blocks, and
ample supply of the young who hate the mullahs,
the road-block idea is practical,
if it is well publicized before the protests start.     Â

The location of someone who uses free Western-based email services (such as Yahoo email, Hotmail, Gmail, ...) and does not click on internet links that are commonly included in email messages (sent to the free email address) cannot be traced by Iranian internet authorities. After all, the mullah's internet police cannot spy on Yahoo email.

Imagine:
Protests similar to 18th Tir with simultaneous blockade of some major motor-ways in the Iranian capital (along with other major cities)

The closure of only some major roads, along with on-going protest (which may only be concentrated at a few locations in the city), will give the impression of a planned synchronized uprising and mass hysteria.

Road closures with an on-going protest would create the desired psychological effect: Tehran residents would feel that the authorities cannot control the protest.

Unable to freely travel, the population would not view the protests as "isolated incidents near the university by a bunch of students." When traffic at the capital is brought to the stand-still, the protest will appear real and "just down the street".

Cars can be left abandoned in the middle of major roads. The rightful owners of the cars, eventually, would not suffer any losses. No one will get hurt when the cars slowly stop and the occupants simply leave the vehicles. Keep in mind that cars are currently at a near stand-still in today's Tehran traffic.  Â

Less than 20 typical Peykans filled with old tires, a few good men, and some good vodka are enough to create enough road blocks (in addition to the usual Tehran traffic) that would substantial mass hysteria. Keep in mind that cars are currently at a near stand-still in today's Tehran traffic.  Old tires (in ample supply at junk-yards and mechanic shops), that cannot be cleared so easily, would be used to slowly block all lanes in a road. No one will get hurt when each lane of traffic is slowly sealed. Keep in mind that cars are currently at a near stand-still in today's Tehran traffic.Â

Take a look at the map of Tehran (available via an internet search). Although Tehran is more densely populated, the area of the Iranian capital city is not bigger than most typical North American cities (with only a fraction of the population).

Roadblocks, apart from each other about every 2 kilometers, would be sufficient to create the desired psychological effect: a population that feels the authorities cannot control the protest.

By looking at the map of the city, roads such as Vali-Asr (Pahlavi Ave.), the old Shemroon Rd., the highway towards Karaj, ...Â

Summer time passions reach the boiling point.Â
Some consider it the season of protest.

Events similar to Tir 18th will happen again.
