Iran’s hardliners threaten to kill Donald Trump after Salman Rushdie attackTelegraph
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/Former US president and his secretary of state Mike Pompeo must be targeted in similar 'revenge' attacks, Iranian newspaper says
Iran’s hardliners have threatened to kill former US president Donald Trump and his secretary of state Mike Pompeo following the stabbing of Sir Salman Rushdie - allegedly by Hadi Matar, a Muslim who has been praised by the religious regime in Tehran.
The Kayhan newspaper, whose editor is personally selected by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has suggested that after Rushdie, “it is now the turn of Trump and Pompeo”.
“God has taken his revenge on Rushdie. The attack on him shows it is not a difficult job to take similar revenge on Trump and Pompeo and from now on they will feel more in danger for their lives,” reads the paper’s front-page editorial today.
In January this year on the first anniversary of the killing of Qassem Suleimani, the commander of the Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force, Iran's president Ebrahim Raisi publicly threatened Trump and Pompeo with retaliation.
“If the conditions for a fair trial of Mr Trump and Mr Pompeo and other criminals become available, they will be charged for committing this heinous crime and will face the consequence of their criminal actions.
“However, let there be no doubt that I say here to all American statesmen that the hand of revenge will eventually come out of the sleeve of our nation.”
Assassination plot 'real and ongoing'
Iran’s attempts to assassinate former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo “are real and ongoing” his successor Anthony Blinken, told US Congress in April.
Although the motive for the attack on Rushdie is not clear yet, Iranian opposition forces in exile have no doubt that the knifeman was influenced by the death sentence that ayatollah Ruhullah Khomeini put on Rushdie for his book Satanic Verses.
“These fatwas for killing people with whose ideas you do not agree are nothing new in the history of Islam in Iran,” Dr Abbas Milani of Stanford University has told London-based Iran International TV.
“They have been issued by fanatic and extremist religious leaders against tens of Iranian writers and intellectuals too. But to issue it against citizens of foreign and democratic countries is simply abhorrent and amounts to religious fascism,” said Dr Milani.
The current Iranian leadership has never rescinded the fatwa, arguing that “it is still valid as an edict of a grand ayatollah”.
The headline of the front page story on the Kayhan newspaper reads: “God has taken his revenge on Rushdie. Next is the turn of Trump and Pompeo.”
Attack 'may have been US plot'
On Sunday, the ultra-conservative daily Javan suggested that the attack may have been a plot hatched by the Americans.
“Maybe a young Muslim, who was not even born when Salman Rushdie wrote his satanic book, wanted revenge on him," it said.
Hadi Matar, the 24-year-old man accused of stabbing Rushdie, pleaded not guilty to attempted murder charges on Saturday.
“Another scenario is that the United States probably wants to spread Islamophobia around the world,” Javan wrote.
Iran's authorities have kept total silence over the attempt to kill the British-American author who was stabbed about 10 times in what the US authorities called a premeditated assault.
Thierry Coville, an expert on Iran at the French Institute for International and Strategic Affairs, said he does not think the authorities were involved.
“I don't see the hand of the Iranian state in this attack, but what is certain is that it will increase mistrust of Iran in the United States,” he said.

Iranian MP hints Salman Rushdie’s horror stabbing was ‘direct work’ of Iran in response to US killing of top generalSun
https://www.the-sun.com/Sick RevengeAN Iranian MP has suggested the brutal stabbing of Salman Rushdie was the "direct work" of the country in response to the US killing of a top general.
The author, 75, was knifed up to 15 times yesterday in front of horrified onlookers in New York after suffering years of death threats over his novel The Satanic Verses.
Salman Rushdie was stabbed multiple times in New York on FridayIran-sympathizer Hadi Matar, 24, was arrested and has been charged with attempted murderAn Iranian MP has hinted the attack was 'direct work' of Iranranian lawmaker Malek Shariati Niasar has chillingly hinted the attack could have been the "direct work" of Iran as he branded Rushdie - who is at risk of losing an eye - an "apostate".
He said: "Attacking the renegade Salman Rushdie in America, if: 1. It should be Iran's work directly: proving the power of Islamic Iran.
"2. The work of a Muslim "Khomeini did not see" and be independent from Iran: exporting the revolution to the heart of the enemy
"3. Let America and England do their own work (!): a lesson in trusting the West.
"But in all three cases it is a warning to the killers of Martyr Soleimani."
Iranian military officer Qasem Soleimani was assassinated in 2020 in a targeted US drone strike in Baghdad - prompting Iran to launch missiles at America's base in Iraq.
It comes as Iran-sympathizer Hadi Matar, 24, has been charged with attempted murder in the second degree after being tackled to the ground by brave audience members at Chautauqua Institution.
Indian-born writer Rushdie remains on a ventilator and is suffering from severed nerves and a damaged liver after he was stabbed multiple times on Friday.
Rushdie was being introduced to give a talk to an audience of hundreds on artistic freedom when a man rushed to the stage and lunged at the novelist, who has lived with a bounty on his head since the late 1980s.
Horrified attendees rushed to his aid with pictures from the scene showing Rushdie lying on the stage as a crowd surrounded him.
Blood could be seen splattered across a screen in the lecture theatre and a chair Rushdie was sitting on.
He was airlifted to hospital, where he remains and is unable to speak.
Iran's dictatorship has celebrated the horror attack - branding Rushdie an "apostate" and "heretic" as they praised his attacker for "tearing neck of the enemy of God with a knife".
More than 30 years ago, the regime called for Rushdie to be murdered - forcing him into hiding.
Ultra-conservative Iranian newspaper Kayhan commended the stabbing in today's issue as its chief Hossein Shariatmadari described Rushdie as "depraved".
He said: "Bravo to this courageous and duty-conscious man who attacked the apostate and depraved Salman Rushdie in New York.
"Let us kiss the hands of the one who tore the neck of the enemy of God with a knife."
FARS News, another regime-owned outlet, accused Rushdie of having "insulted the Prophet of Islam (PBUH)" with the book's "anti-religious content".
DEATH THREATSRushdie, who was born into a Muslim Kashmiri family in Bombay, now Mumbai, before moving to the UK, has long faced death threats for his fourth novel, The Satanic Verses.
It was banned in many countries with large Muslim populations upon its 1988 publication.
A few months later, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then Iran's supreme leader, pronounced a fatwa, or religious edict, calling upon Muslims to kill the novelist and anyone involved in the book's publication for blasphemy.
Rushdie, who called his novel "pretty mild," went into hiding for nearly a decade.
Hitoshi Igarashi, the Japanese translator of the novel, was murdered in 1991.
The Iranian government said in 1998 it would no longer back the fatwa, and Rushdie has lived relatively openly in recent years.
Iranian organisations, some affiliated with the government, have raised a bounty worth millions of dollars for Rushdie's murder.
And Khomeini's successor as supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said as recently as 2019 that the fatwa was "irrevocable."
Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency and other news outlets donated money in 2016 to increase the bounty by $600,000 (£500,000).
Matar, from New Jersey, had a pass to access the event and was arrested after the attack.
He has now been charged with attempted murder after cops last night raided his home in Fairview.
HORROR ATTACKThe 24-year-old allegedly stormed the stage and began attacking Rushdie - who was scheduled to speak alongside author Henry Reese.
Witnesses told AP News that Rushdie fell through a barrier to the floor and was seen with blood on his hands.
Rushdie remains in hospital and it's feared he could lose an eye.
Andrew Wylie, his book agent, said: "The news is not good.
"Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged."
Rabbi Charles Savenor told The Sun Online he was in the crowd when the violent scene erupted.
Savenor, 53, said the horror attack went on for "20 to 40 seconds" before Rushdie's alleged attacker was stopped.
He said: “At first no one knew how to respond. We didn’t know what we were witnessing, what we were looking at.
“We were about 75 feet away and we saw the assailant attack Mr. Rushdie.
“His arm was going up and down, I didn’t know if he was punching him or if he had a knife," Savenor recalled.
“The crowd was just shocked but within a few seconds, there was a sense that we were witnessing an assault in real-time."
An AP reporter said he witnessed the man punch or stab the author "10 to 15 times".

Who is the 24-year-old man who attacked Salman Rushdie?Indian Express
https://indianexpress.com/Here's what we know of the 24-year-old suspect in Salman Rushdie's stabbing at an event in New York
Law enforcement officers detain Hadi Matar, 24, of Fairview, New Jersey, outside the Chautauqua Institution, August 12, 2022, in Chautauqua, New York.Minutes after author Salman Rushdie was stabbed on Friday, police took a 24-year-old man into custody. Rushdie, an Indian-origin best-selling author based in the UK, was attacked at a book event at New York’s Chautauqua Institution on Friday evening. Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred minutes after the author took his seat on the stage and was about to be introduced.
The 75-year-old, who was born in Bombay, has faced Islamist death threats for years for writing the novel ‘The Satanic Verses’. The book was banned shortly after publication in several countries, including India, and triggered a fatwa against Rushdie by Iran’s then Supreme Leader.
“A man jumped up on the stage from I don’t know where and started what looked like beating him on the chest, repeated fist strokes into his chest and neck,” Bradley Fisher, who was in the audience, told news agency Reuters. Shortly afterwards, the attacker was taken into police custody. Here’s what we know of him.
Who stabbed Salman Rushdie?Law enforcement officials have identified the attacker as Hadi Matar. The 24-year-old man reportedly hails from New Jersey. An initial sweep of Matar’s social media accounts by law enforcement showed him to be sympathetic to Shia extremism and the causes of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a law enforcement person with direct knowledge of the investigation told NBC News.
Though there are no direct links between Matar and the IRGC, law enforcement officers reportedly found images of slain commander Qassem Solemani and an Iraqi extremist sympathetic to the Iranian regime in a cell phone messaging app belonging to Matar, according to NBC News. Soleimani was a senior Iranian military officer who served in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. From 1998 until his assassination in 2020.
Police did not describe the weapon used. The suspect’s attorney, public defender Nathaniel Barone, said he was still gathering information and declined to comment. Matar’s home was blocked off by authorities.
Police said they have not zeroed in on the motive. “But we are working with the FBI, the Sheriff’s Office and we will determine what the cause of this was and what the motive for this attack was,” said Major Eugene Staniszewski of the New York State Police, reported PTI.
The suspect in Friday’s attack had a “pass to access the grounds,” Dr Michael E Hill, president of the Chautauqua Institution, said in the news conference, reported PTI. Guests can purchase passes to attend programs, Hill said.
How the events unfoldedStaniszewski said at 10.47 am local time (8.17 pm IST), Rushdie had just arrived on stage at the Chautauqua Institution for the event.
“Shortly thereafter, the suspect jumped onto the stage and attacked Rushdie, stabbing him at least once in the neck and at least once in the abdomen,” he said.
https://twitter.com/AP/status/155821406 ... 8087473%2FStaniszewski said several members of the staff at the institution and audience members rushed the suspect and took him to the ground. A trooper with the New York State Police, who was at the institution, took the suspect into custody with the assistance of a Chautauqua County Sheriff’s deputy.
Photographs showed a man, wearing an army fatigue shirt and jacket and sporting a buzzcut being frog-marched to a police vehicle.
Where is Matar from? While addressing a press conference, Staniszewski was asked of Matar’s nationality, to which he replied: “I don’t know yet.”
He said authorities are in the “process of obtaining search warrants for various items. There was a backpack located at the scene. There was also electronic devices”. He added that at the moment, it is assumed that the suspect was “working alone”.
Rushdie was provided with immediate help by a doctor who was present in the audience, and was later tended to by the emergency services and airlifted to a hospital, said the police.
